Best Practices & Tips
Your résumé—while arguably the most important part of a job search—is still only one component. Timely, targeted job searches yield the best results.
Your résumé was built around a specific job title (you heard me talk about this during the process). If you start applying outside of that job title, expect to make edits so your content aligns with the new role.
You also want to apply as soon as possible. The earlier you get into the application pool, the higher your chances of landing an interview. Speed matters.
Here’s what I recommend doing immediately:
- Use the built-in Boolean Search tool below to create Google Alerts for your target roles.
-
Customize your LinkedIn job search results to surface newly posted roles:
In LinkedIn, go to Jobs. Search your job title, location, and any key filters (industry, etc). Filter for Past 24 hours. Then in the URL, find
r86400and change it to3600(seconds in 1 hour). If there are no results, try7200, and so on. This helps you find roles posted within the last 1–2 hours. The key is to get in early.
- Graphic Résumé Tip: Before viewing/editing the Word version of your graphic résumé, install the included fonts from your delivery email. Also, remember that this file is for networking and in person interviewing. Do not use this version to attach to job applications.
- Note: Some ATS parse perfectly; others need a few manual fixes. Workday often requires manual input—totally normal.
Boolean Search Builder
Recruiters use Boolean searches to surface candidates. You’ll use it to surface fresh jobs. Build a string and open it in Google, then set an Alert.
