Shoot Your Shot Professionally: Networking for Dummies
Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by the awkwardness of networking. Most hands are definitely up. Networking is hard, but it's also non-negotiable. Connecting with the right people, in the right way can make all the difference. It’s not about showing up to events with sweaty palms or sending random “Can we connect?” requests online. It’s about creating genuine relationships that can open doors you didn’t even know existed.
We're giving you the blueprint for networking online, and in-person, plus bridging the gap to network with those who are close to you.
Becoming a LinkedIn Whisperer
LinkedIn should be the number one tool to make networking feel easy. A like here, a comment there, and if you're willing to take an extra step - a quick InMail message. But sometimes this is simply not enough.
Put yourself in the recipient's shoes, when crafting a message. They’re busy, they don’t know you, and they probably don’t have time to play detective. Your goal should be to make life easy for them and present key information in your initial interaction, so try something like this:
"Hi [Name], I’ve been following your work and noticed you’re hiring for [specific role]. I’m a [profession] with experience in [specific skills], and I’d love to connect. If you have time for a quick chat, I’d be happy to share my insights on [related topic]. In return, I’m happy to give you skill endorsements.”
See the difference? You're not just asking for something, you're now offering value. By giving key information, they can tell you if they can help you or if not at this time. Plus, bonus points to you if you have already been engaging with them through likes or comments on posts. Getting on their radar in this way could make them more likely to respond.
And don't forget, put your alumni network to use. Alumni groups, online forums, and existing connections could be goldmines. LinkedIn has a fantastic alumni tool that allows you to filter by industry or company.
Becoming an In-Person Network Machine
For some the real challenge comes when networking in person. If you don't think someone will magically offer you a job, congratulations you're correct! The key to in-person networking is forming real connections and treating it like a chance to have genuine conversations.
Be sure not to open with your resume or treat it like a pre-job interview. If you’re at an event, ask questions about the other person’s work or insights into the industry. People typically enjoy talking about themselves and showing a genuine interest is the icing on the cake. After establishing some rapport, follow up with something actionable like this:
"I loved your perspective on [topic]. Would you be open to a quick coffee chat to discuss it further? I’d love to hear more about your journey and share some of my own experiences."
Keep in mind that networking isn't about closing a deal on the spot. It’s about planting seeds for future opportunities. Even if the person you meet can’t help you directly, they might know someone who can.
The Friends-and-Family Discount
Here’s a hot take: you’re probably underutilizing your current network. Yes, your family, friends, former coworkers, people you volunteer with, and anyone else is part of your professional web. If you are job searching, don't be shy, let them know. There is nothing wrong with asking for help and you never know who could connect you to your dream job.
When you reach out to them, be sure to keep it simple:
"Hi [Name], I’m exploring opportunities in [field] and was wondering if you know anyone in your network who might be able to share insights or advice. I’d really appreciate it!"
These casual conversations could open doors for you! You just have to be willing to put in the work and be confident about reaching out.
