Using ChatGPT to Write a Resume

TLDR: ChatGPT is an excellent productivity tool but will only write a resume like a cheap resume mill. Give generic inputs, get generic outputs.

Whether you write the resume yourself or hire someone to help with the process, there is a significant time investment if you want something that tells your authentic story and sells your best work.

I'm most surprised that the AI recommended an objective statement! I know it's only trained up to 2021, but objective statements have been outdated for over a decade!

Here's what ChatGPT is great for regarding your job search.
1. Comparing job postings. You can copy and paste multiple job descriptions into ChatGPT and ask it to compare each, pulling out the similarities and differences. This will give you a good idea if you need to narrow your job search.

2. Identifying metrics. "We don't measure success by numbers in this job." ChatGPT will differ on that! Ask what standard metrics are used for a specific job title, and it will give you a list...some are not applicable, and you only want to use what resonates with you.

3. Acting as an ATS. Ask it to compare your resume to a job posting, and you will get detailed information on what needs to be added to your resume to help you strengthen it (or realize your background is not a good fit).

4. Grammar and spell checking. You can ask ChatGPT to check your resume for grammar and spelling issues. You have to be very specific with your prompt. Otherwise, it will rewrite the document without telling me what changes were made. Give the prompt: Check this resume for grammar issues. Only reply with the identified errors and the recommended corrections. It sometimes gives you feedback that doesn't make sense, like "This sentence says "I want feedback on my resume." It should be corrected to "I want feedback on my resume." Repeating the same thing...so yeah, it's not the MOST reliable, but it will catch things you may have yet to see using Grammarly or your own eyes.

When it comes to writing your resume, it's a productivity tool, not an automation tool. You will still need to put in the work!
