Maximizing Your Degree as a New Graduate

~50% of new graduates report they have been unable to find a job or are underemployed six months after graduating. In addition, 40% of recent graduates have no intention of ever working in the field they studied in school (sorry to any moms and dads out there who foot the bill).

Finding a job that aligns with your degree can be somewhat challenging. The good news is that your degree can pave the way for many opportunities. What matters now is how you leverage it. Here are some strategies to help you put your degree to work and meaningfully kickstart your career:

Understand Your Transferable Skills

If your degree doesn't directly relate to your desired job role, focus on the transferable skills you've built during your studies. These could include:

  • Research Skills

  • Analytical Skills

  • Communication Skills

  • Time Management

  • Teamwork

Focus on how these skills can benefit the role you're applying for.

Be Realistic

We all start somewhere. This new degree does not guarantee a glamorous corner office with leadership duties. Focus on entry-level roles that require 0-2 years of experience. Read the job descriptions and only apply if you fit most requirements, especially the MUST haves. If you need ten years of experience, it’s not the right job.

Network

Your network is a crucial asset when job hunting. Check with your school’s alumni/alumnae association and career center to get connected with professionals who can help you navigate the beginning of your career journey. Attend industry events, both virtually and in person. Make connections through social networking platforms and join groups that interest you. Convert these connections into opportunities.

Don’t Shy Away from Internships

An internship might be unpaid, but it can be an invaluable investment. It allows you to put your theoretical knowledge to practical use while building a robust network and experience that employers value.

Continued Learning

Make continuous learning an integral part of your life. Join professional development courses. Learn a new language, coding, or soft skills to strengthen your resume and make you stand out.

Set SMART Goals

Set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) career goals. Having clear goals can keep you focused and motivated.

Attitude is Everything

Stay resilient and keep a positive mindset. Don’t get discouraged by rejection. Every 'no' brings you closer to a 'yes.'’

Remember processing your degree into a fulfilling career is a journey, not a race. Make every step count and steer yourself towards career success.

You're ready. Go out and show the world what you've got!
